The work contains the most authoritative edition and study of the Spanish playwright and musician Lucas Fernández's Farsas y églogas, based on the 1514 Salamanca edition. Six of Fernández's religious and profane plays survive, of which his Easter play, Auto de la Pasión, is considered the best. All show the influence of his rival Juan del Encina, one of the founders of Spanish drama. Fernández's work is known for its affective dialogue andhumor and for the interweaving of song within the text of his plays. Dialogo para cantar is an early example of the zarzuela, a popular Spanish lyric-dramatic genre. Françoise Maurizi is a profesor at the Université de Caen in France.
